  • day 301: People Are Strange

People Are Strange, by The Doors.

This song is not in my top 20 Doors songs, but it’s creepy, and reminds me of The Lost Boys, possibly my favorite movie just before I really got into movies.

    Halloween weekend, let’s get spoopy?

  • day 249: Five to One

Five to One, by The Doors.

Some of y’all know this song, and some of y’all know this sample. I’ve been listening to The Doors episode of the Bandsplain podcast, and the little clip they played of this and, well, all the other Jim Morrison bits and pieces reminded me pretty explicitly of what is best tagged as “my Jim Morrison period” so I figured this number would be a somewhat less dramatic way to channel it a little. As opposed to, say, The End. But I still kinda feel like doing Moonlight Drive.

The version from the double live CD compilation from the ’90s is the one that plays in my head, so I sing parts of the end in that cadence, even though I didn’t drop everything out or banter with the crowd or anything.

I really should’ve given the guitar solo another take or two, but the new dog wasn’t enjoying the high notes, and apparently is of course not a fan of my scream-singing, as evidenced by me looking around at him and trying to figure out if he was about to drop bombs on the office rug while I did the vocal video.

[UPDATE: I messed up the day count, maybe for the first time? Fixed it now.]

  • day 230: The Crystal Ship

The Crystal Ship, by The Doors.

The Doors catalog was so important to me in my teenage years, high on the list of “things I used to listen to multiple times a week that I never hear anymore.” Is that normal? Maybe. How many of are still listening to your teenage music on repeat?

This song was always somewhere between a throwaway and an epic, I think? Like on the record it’s a relatively quiet and quick thing, but live versions might jam out for a while. OK, let’s get real, it’s a makeout song.

Keeping it quick tonight. Started learning and rehearsing one of my favorites today, but I need a weekend day to do it right. (Oh, pre-gaming the songs is not common, but I do try things in advance. I record each song in one day.)

  • day 61: Universal Mind

    Universal Mind, by The Doors.

How large did The Doors and Jim Morrison’s poetry loom in my teenage years? I’d say those two things, as channeled through the Oliver Stone movie (Val Kilmer!), were maybe the biggest influence on my attempts at writing poetry, songs, letters, a story for myself, screenplays, going to film school, and lots more, with connections to summer camp and even then so much of it was mine and mine alone. (Yes, I thought this as a teenager.)

This song is just another riff for Jim to Jim over and for Ray to Ray over, but I like it. Not sure how it got there, but it popped into my head tonight and I thought I’d try it out.

A little backup vocal and one run with the MIDI keyboard to add the requisite organ.
